You already have enough on your plate after suffering an injury in an accident that wasn’t your fault. The last thing you should have to worry about is trying to pay the medical bills that keep piling up, especially if you’ve been forced to miss work due to your accident.

A skilled attorney with Carner & DeVita can help you understand your options while your personal injury claim is pending and any other questions you might have.

In the meantime, continue reading to learn about some of the options that might be available to you.

Paying the bills – how to do it

If you don’t want to or can’t pay your accident-related medical expenses pending resolution of your case, there are many options available to you, including coverage through your car insurance policy, your health insurance, and a medical lien.

Car insurance

In addition to standard liability coverage, New York requires that all drivers have no-fault or personal injury protection (PIP) coverage of at least $50,000 for medical and other expenses.

PIP can be used to pay for medical expenses and lost earnings related to the accident regardless of who was at fault. Although the amount your policy will pay is limited to the amount of coverage you’ve purchased, it could still be helpful in the event of an accident.

Health insurance

Your health insurance may also cover your medical treatment after an accident if your PIP benefits exhaust the policy.  However, in limited circumstances, they might seek reimbursement for amounts they paid after you’ve received your personal injury settlement.

A medical lien

If you’re working with a reputable attorney, some doctors and other medical providers will provide care and treatment on a medical lien. This means that the doctor is providing care based on the agreement that they will be paid from your settlement or a jury award.

A medical lien may be beneficial to you if you require extensive care or if your necessary treatment isn’t covered by your PIP and/or health insurance.
